Millennials present a unique opportunity for brands and small businesses that want to market directly to Generation Y. This group is highly coveted because of their incredible purchasing power. Millennials are slated to make up half the workforce in America by 2020 and it is important to make these consumers loyalists to your brand before they enter the job market. By tossing out old myths and studying Millennial’s buying habits, the more it becomes clear that the most effective way to reach them is with social media marketing that appeals to their emotions. But simply sharing coupons and fun pictures isn’t going to cut it.

First, a little about Generation Y:

-57 percent of Millennials follow brands on social media for the sole reason of entering contents and getting free stuff.

-They do not respond well to businesses that post excessively on Facebook and Twitter.

-They deem branded hashtags desperate and annoying.

-They do not like to be forced into using such things as Facebook Connect and other social plugins.

-If you appeal to this group in the right way, your business will see a marked increase in sales. 50 percent of Millennials have used social media to get information before making a purchase.

HOW TO APPEAL TO MILLENNIALS

A recent study of Generation Y revealed that 95 percent of those asked said their friends are their most credible source for information regarding purchases and are 98 percent more likely to engage in a post about a brand with their friends than by the brand itself. Using this information, the best way to reach Millennials is to get them talking about your brand with their friends online. The only way to do this is to be authentic and to be engaged with them. By showing them that your business cares about them on a personal level, you appeal to their emotions. When you do this, they are more likely to buy from your company and share your content. Creating content that is interesting to them is key so they will share it and will not feel as though they are being sold to.

Millennials are turning more and more to social media to talk about their experiences and also what they like and dislike about brands. This is an incredible opportunity for brands to encourage loyalty in this age group. When they mention your brand or business directly on social media, make sure you engage and respond to them personally. Do not ignore their comments. Instead talk to them. In all likelihood, they will tell their followers that you did so.

Keeping your posts fresh and engaging is another way to appeal to Millennials. If content isn’t appealing and it is not getting the reaction you are hoping for, be sure you are not talking about yourself too much. Try turning the posts into actual conversations. Also, post content that is relevant for the time of year and ask for input (i.e. “Where are you watching fireworks for the Fourth of July this year?). This helps to spark conversations. You can also post teasers to upcoming events, giveaways and contents. This will keep their interest peaked and have them checking back often. Be sure you have a good call-to-action.

Appealing to Millennials on social media can be challenging, but with the help of the tips above, your business can reap the benefits of followers who share and buy your products and services.
