We’re swooning over creative domain suffixes! Oh the possibilities!
As our minds are jumping at the sweet thought of claiming a domain name that incorporates this creative branding treat, the logical side of our business brains kick-in with the caveat of “is this really the right decision for your business?” And just like that, our hands are swiftly smacked away from the cookie jar and we’re reminded that we need to think before acting on enticing little possibilities of this nature within the web marketing universe. At least [insert a dramatic pouting sigh]…for now.
(Re)Naming your biz utilizing the creative domain structure… think twice before doing this folks.
The “.in” domain suffix is a super cool idea but it might not be in your best interest to create an entire company name around it. For example, we would LOVE to have people go to Organik.ly (which we own by the way) and potentially have that be the name of our company. We could have some serious fun with that one! But the reality is that human behavior, where internet search is concerned, will inevitably prompt people to search for us by typing in “organikly” or “organicly” in which case they will (more than likely) not find us.
As tempting as it is to be a trend setter, this is one tactic that could do more harm than good to your business if you jump too soon.
As creative suffix’s gain in popularity they’re certainly a stellar concept to keep in your back pocket, but we’re thinking it’s too early to tell if the trend will catch-on enough for people to actually know how to specifically seek businesses out at this point in time. From our experience people would most likely still type in the above referenced snafu’s or even worse… “organik.ly.com” in which case they would really be scratching their heads with mixture of confusion and frustration. It’s also worth mentioning that within that troublesome time frame you could risk losing the interest of your seeking audience. Not only due to the small frame of time you have to capture their attention, but now you’ve potentially lost them because they’ve grown annoyed and impatient.
Buy now, implement later.
Creative domains are certainly clever and at roughly $9 per month it’s not a bad idea to snag yours for the time being if you’ve got the budget for it. Take note that prices may vary and we’re told that the price tag on certain suffixes could increase in the near future. That said however, in our humble opinion, we’d suggest holding onto it until the right moment strikes for you to start utilizing it into your marketing strategy.
Add it to the vision board.
So have some fun with the idea of your very own creative domain suffix.
Dream about it.
Scribble out the possibilities.
Maybe even buy it now.
Then save it for that dazzling moment when the world is ready and will not only “totally get it” but perhaps get just as excited as you are about how friggin’ cool it is.
