This month, we are shining the spotlight on a great company in our “Companies That Care” segment. We are featuring MiiR, an empowering company that sells customizable socially-conscious outdoors products that, when purchased, provide one person with clean water for a whole year!
Pronounced “meer” (rhymes with beer), MiiR is named after the naturalist John Muir. The spelling was changed to make the brand unique. Mir also translates in Russian to
“world” or “peace” which are the cornerstones to the company. MiiR is the brainchild of outdoor adventurer and entrepreneur Bryan Papé. In 2009, he decided he wanted to design a more functional water bottle, better suited to an active lifestyle. Papé also wanted the bottle to be simple to use and easily customized. While he was creating the new bottles, Papé learned that almost a billion, yes billion, people do not have access to clean drinking water. Lack of clean water is the number one cause of death in developing countries and 80% of the diseases in the world are blamed on unsafe water and sanitation. These devastating statistics inspired Papé to give back. So now, one dollar of every MiiR bottle purchased can provide a single person with clean drinking water for a year. The $1 goes directly to those who need it.
Tracking the Progress
MiiR believes that clean water is a basic human right and aims to bring awareness to the need for clean water around the globe. Customers who buy a MiiR hydration product can track their specific purchase by the small metal tag attached to each item and see how their contribution is helping someone. By registering their codes, MiiR will send them GPS coordinates and photos of the water projects that their purchases helped to fund. How cool is that?
The MiiR water bottles are the best bottles on Earth! Each bottle is BPA free and made from durable 188 stainless steel. You can customize them to make them uniquely your own. MiiR also sells pint cups, bicycles, howlers and growlers. The MiiR pints are used by many different breweries, including Northern Pine Brewing in San Diego. This very cool local brewing company was started by the brother-in-law of our own client strategist Lilly Sundvik (woohoo!). Other companies such as Patagonia and Stone Brewing Co. also use MiiR cups.
MiiR also sells bikes, and for every bike purchased, MiiR gives a bike to a worthy recipient. “We see health through clean water, mobility through bicycles, and education as three investments to help reduce poverty,” Papé says. The company is also looking to expand into bags this fall to facilitate education for poor people.
MiiR Flagship Store
Recently, MiiR opened up its flagship store in Seattle that features all their products, along with specialty coffee, craft beer and yummy snacks. The store also features a growler-filling station with 15 beers on tap. Each cup of coffee and beer that is sold at the store will help provide one person with clean water for a day. You can also track the progress with a code on your receipt!
