We are happy to give the “Companies That Care” spotlight this week to Pencils of Promise, a company that is committed to educating the children of the world, one pencil at a time!
Pencils of Promise began with one simple question from a boy begging in the streets of India. A man named Adam asked the boy that he wanted most in the world. The boy answered, “A pencil.” The man reached into his backpack and gave him the pencil. He watched as the boy was filled with wonderment and possibility. Adam, the founder of Pencils of Promise, traveled to more than 50 countries giving out thousands of pencils and pens to children everywhere and started the organization in 2008.
There are 250 million children who lack a basic education, and Pencils of Promise intends to change this. From years of listening to children and parents, it became clear that there was a need for an international nonprofit that was led on-the-ground by a staff of locals from within each country, required village participation in each school, and deeply supported, trained and tracked each student to ensure their success.

Pencils of Promise is a global leader in the movement to support the world with great educational opportunities for all. They have built more than 200 schools and monitor and evaluate every project they undertake, and thus far every school they’ve opened is fully operational and educating students daily. Private donors, events and companies cover the operational costs of Pencils of Promise so 100% of each and every dollar donated online goes DIRECTLY into their programs to educate children.
Pencils of Promise is proof that a generation empowered will empower the world. One child, one pencil at a time.
