When it comes to content marketing, hoping it will jump-start itself or be successful on its own is a mistake. Content marketing has nothing to do with luck or hope and everything to do with planning and process. Content marketing success does not happen overnight but with these helpful tips, you can create a solid plan to ensure a good outcome.

The major challenge with content marketing is not having enough time. It can be difficult to carve out a schedule for tasks relating to content marketing. Unfortunately, if you choose not to invest upfront in developing a good system, you will end up wasting more time. You don’t want to spend your hours doing things that can easily be automated. Instead, you can improve your content marketing plan to be efficient and effective.

To build out your content marketing process, you first need to have all your content assets in one place. This means having a home for all your content. Rather than having all your pieces in Word and email boxes, have them in a place where it can be shared, updated and worked on together by everyone involved, if needed. This serves as a library of all your finished work and also a great resource for any new employees or writers to learn about how you want your content to be written.

Having an organized workflow for your content creation is the next step in your marketing plan and execution. Everyone on your team should have a clear vision of the plan, how to produce it and how to promote the content. But keep in mind your content will change as your organization changes. The key is to have a precise plan but also be able to go with the flow when things change. Keeping an open dialogue about these changes with your team members allows you to quickly adapt. For example, if your Q2 product release gets pushed back to Q3, you must be able to have your content reflect that change easily and seamlessly. That way, relevant content is still being produced and you are not spinning your wheels trying to re-d0 or re-format everything.

Your content should also have a consistent voice or style. This way, your readers will know the content is uniquely yours. Your brand should feel homogenous across all social media platforms and channels. Sometimes looking at other companies content that you admire can aid in helping you come up with your own style. Researching other content can help you realize some of the elements you might be missing, a sound structure that works for your team and how your own guidelines should differ. Having all your content in one place (as referenced to above), allows your team to create content that is uniform and helps to build the personality of your brand.

The final step towards your solid content marketing plan is to adopt the techniques and process. Hold a session to train your team so that they are all on the same page and can be more efficient. This makes the whole transition easier. Process leads you to successful content marketing and saves you time and money.
