How to Use the Facebook Save Button

With all the content on Facebook, sometimes it is helpful to be able to save it to read later. You also want to be able to quickly access that saved content. Some people take a screenshot of the article they are interested in saving and email it to themselves but that is a lot of steps and you usually end up forgetting about it. Facebook now offers a Facebook Save button for saving articles that you are interested in reading later. For businesses, this is an important new feature that impacts how your content shows up in the new feed. Your customers can avoid the hassle of missing content by using this feature. But how does it work?

Facebook recently introduced a new tool called Save on Facebook that both desktop and mobile users can access. Not only can you save posts to read later, you can also get a reminder to look at your saved items. This feature lets you save links, places, events and other items but you can not save things like photos.

Here’s How You Use the Save on Facebook Feature:

When you find an article you want to save for later, click the down arrow in the upper-right corner of the updates and choose Save “Whatever the Name of the Article Is”. Check the Favorites list in your sidebar and you should see the new link called Saved.

This new Save feature will impact how your content shows up in the news feed by affecting the Link visibility. You might consider adjusting your status update content ratio to something such as 50% links, 25% photos/videos and 25% status updates. Play around and experiment with what ratios work best for your content.

THE CATCH: If an update doesn’t have link preview, you can not save it.

Favorite Pages

Facebook also offers interest lists as a way to organize and keep track of specific people and pages that you are following. You can create an interest list of your favorite pages and that way you can quickly go to a list and view any posts you might have missed. This alleviates continuous scrolling through the news feed to find what you are looking for. By keeping your Facebook interest lists small, you won’t miss posts from pages that post tons of content or have to go back and look through all the posts from different profiles and pages on the list.

THE CATCH: Interest lists won’t let you save a specific URL. These lists are basically curated news feeds.

Bitly Bundle Links

Bundled posts from Bit.ly are one of the quickest and easiest ways to save posts from Facebook. This tool allows you to save several links in one place and create more than one bundle. You can organize your links by subject or anything else that you choose.

To create a bundle, go to Bit.ly and click on Bundles, then select Create a New Bundle and name your bundle. You want to also give your bundle a description and then click Make Bundle. You can now start adding URLs. From Facebook, click on the timestamp or the date and copy/paste the URL into your bundle. If you don’t want others to see your bundle, be sure you click the lock to make it private. Bit.ly also allows you to rename a URL by clicking on the pencil icon.

THE CATCH: If you save the URL and that URL is ever taken off Facebook, you will not be able to get back to that Facebook post.

Other Ways to Organize and Save Content

Tools such as Evernote and Skitch are great ways to save content from Facebook. They allow for more flexibility to save posts anywhere. Both work really well on both desktop and mobile devices. You can install Evernote browser extension that lets you click on the timestamp or the date of any Facebook post. You can then clip the whole article into Evernote. This saves the post as well as its URL. If you are on a smartphone, simply use your private Evernote email address and mail the link to your Evernote account. You can then save the post in a specific notebook that you want.

THE CATCH: Both Evernote and Skitch are free apps but if you plan on clipping a lot of items, you will want to get the premium version so you have more space.
