Last week I talked about what a Bitly is and why businesses should use them. This week, I want to talk about using Bitly as a bookmarking and marketing tool.
The tool called Bitlinks is a useful way to track, collect and organize your favorite links. You don’t have to sign up for an account if you are simply using Bitly as a URL shortener. You can easily paste any long link into the shortening bar on the front page. If you are interested in using Bitlinks to keep a collection of all your links, you can sign up for an free account through Facebook, Twitter or via email. You can also use the user-friendly iOS Bitly app on the go.
After you have created and signed in to your account, you can start copying any links you want and pasting it into the URL shortening bar at the top of the page. If you are shortening or saving a good amount of links, you can also use the search bar right under the shortening bar to locate a specific link. There is also a sorting option in the top right corner to sort your Bitlinks by the date created, number of clicks they received or alphabetically. Note that Bitly refers to any links shortened with its service as Bitlinks and your Bitlinks are automatically added to your account. You new links will be visible in the center of the page each time you add a new one. Hovering over any Bitlink with your mouse allows you to do things like send a link by email, share it on Facebook or Twitter, instantly copy a shortened link and set it as Public or Private in your network.
Another cool feature in Bitlinks is that you can organize your links using the Bundles feature. By hitting the “Bundles” link of the left sidebar, you can always access your links. When you add a new Bitlink, you can click the “Add to bundle” option to any. This pulls up a list of existing Bundles and also allows you to add a new one. You can share entire Bundles as well. If you are marketing a group of related stories and don’t want to share them one by one on your social media sites, you can use this helpful feature to do it all at once. There are a lot of other things you can do with your Bundles page, such as add more Bitlinks, change their order, hide the previews and so much more.
Because Bitly is a social tool, everything is shared publicly by default. You can easily change that any time by switching the “Public” option to “Private” on the front page. Same goes for Bundle pages. You can access from the “Bundles” listed in the sidebar and switch them from “Public” to “Private”. Another nice feature is you can see what Bitlinks people in your network are sharing. You can also see clicks and stats.
Another great way to use Bitly for marketing is to use branded short domains. This is the first step to keep your brand at the front of your digital sharing efforts. You can turn your audience into brand ambassadors by ensuring organic sharing is auto-branded.
You can also use customized Bitly links to market your business. You are already optimizing your ad copy so why not optimize your short links? By customizing the second half of your branded Bitlinks, you will gain higher CTRs while educating your audience at the same time.
