You might have heard the term “Facebook Open Graph” lately and wondered what it is. Facebook has created a platform that allows websites and apps to share information about users and tailor offers to them, based on their interests and tastes. Facebook’s Open Graph is extremely useful to businesses because it allows these websites and apps to share information with each other. It also allows developers to integrate their applications and pages into Facebook’s platform and link Facebook with outside sites on the web. By adding metadata, you can turn websites into graph objects. The Open Graph is a key tool in fostering engagement by taking a static action and turning it into a potential social action. For example, if a person logs into Spotify through their Facebook account, the music application can now use Facebook Open Graph technology to post what you are listening onto friends’ news feeds. In turn, friends can comment, like or listen to the song. Any website/company where you see some kind of call to action (to log in or connect via Facebook), is utilizing Facebook’s Open Graph.
In April of 2010, Facebook launched Open Graph API and it has since opened it up to third-party applications. This platform lets you do much more than just connect to your Facebook site. Now, you have a new set of programming tools that lets you get more information from Facebook. By visiting a website like Yelp, via your Facebook profile, Facebook Open Graph allows Yelp to access any information you’ve made public, such as your favorite band, food or venue. Yelp can use that information to give you recommendations about restaurants or music venues.
Using Facebook’s Open Graph, businesses can gain a better understanding of their fan base by seeing what’s being shared and by whom. This kind of engagement is what more and more companies are now seeking in social media marketing. Users can now have better control over what content is being shared. The message is now more relevant since it’s coming from someone that the user knows, not from a brand.
Facebook Social Plugins
Facebook’s Open Graph API comes with several plug-ins that you can easily drop into your site. The new plugins include the LIKE button, Activity Feed, Recommendations, Like Box, Facepile, Login Button, Comments and Live Stream. By using these plug-ins, you can make your pages more closely integrated with Facebook. By using the new Social plugin from Facebook, the LIKE button turns any of your pages into a Facebook “Fan” page, but hosted on your own website. Visitors clicking on the LIKE button become fans of the page and the link is now shared with their Facebook network. Additionally, you can now add content to their Facebook News Feed.
